The Best Study Habits for Online Learning
Now that September is well on it’s way and most students are back to school, there may be a bit of confusion on how to best navigate learning from home. If your child is at school remotely, part-time, or back in the school building - managing time for studying is always difficult.
Back when I was in school, I often found myself overwhelmed at having to manage my own time and create a schedule that I knew I would actually stick to (one that didn’t involve me checking social media or texting friends every five minutes). Homework questions, quizzes, lectures, and notes all became increasingly difficult and I knew that I needed to find a better system for myself.
With the changes made for school this fall, you may be finding yourself in a similar situation and unsure of the best way to manage your child being home for school. No matter where you are - classroom, living room, outside backyard - for class, here are study habits that will help guide you and your family through this unique school year!
1. Create your own classroom environment.
Even though some of you are not physically in school and the beanbag chair in your room is much more appealing, creating a small “classroom” gives you a better mental space for learning. You don’t need much room and having an area that is designated for school work will help! For example, gather your school supplies (pens, paper, textbooks) and put them all together, easy to grab. Also, pull up a chair that you’re comfortable sitting in for extended periods of time, your electronics, and maybe even a lamp for better lighting.

2. Create a schedule.
Now, this may seem obvious, but not everyone makes a schedule and sticks to it. When going through your classes, homework, and studying - you may find yourself overwhelmed with everything you have to do. Creating a schedule will help clear up any confusion on what you should be working on, and when. If your child’s teacher provided students with a schedule, then I suggest going over it with your kids so that everyone knows what is to be expected. Creating a schedule also includes break times, meals, and of course, playtime. This will help provide a well-rounded day!
3. Reduce distractions.
Being in the classroom can be difficult in itself, let alone learning how to do it in the comfort of your own home. By reducing certain distractions, your child will be able to focus more on school. This means limited phone time, not doing work in front of the TV, or possibly away from other siblings. This will also help your child get their work done and leave plenty of time for play!

4. Get creative, make it fun.
While distractions should be limited and homework should be done first, that doesn’t mean fun can’t be implemented! You can have fun with your very own Eimmie Classroom Set for your study area and dolls! Additionally, creating a schedule will allow you to include playtime. Make sure you’re getting outside for plenty of physical activity along with some fresh air. Sitting in a chair all day long can be difficult, especially for younger children. If you want to get extra crazy, you can create a theme for your at-home classroom - perhaps Harry Potter?
5. Reach out to the teacher for questions.
While this may seem obvious, chances are teachers are also doing their best to adjust to their new plan. If you or your child have any questions, please reach out to the teacher! In fact, your teacher may already have a detailed classroom guide for website logins, textbooks, worksheet downloads, and more! Make sure to utilize all resources that are provided. I suggest keeping a folder of important information that your child may need. Teachers are here to answer questions and I am sure you will end up having plenty!
With these tips and tricks in mind, I hope that this school year brings forth success and a new appreciation for teachers! Studying and homework can be scary but know that we are all in this together. Good luck!
Warmly,
