RECIPE: Homemade Dog Treats

Mar 23, 2020
puppy day, national puppy day, puppies, dog treat recipes, homemade dog treats, homemade puppy treats, puppy treats, puppy toys,

Maybe I am biased but dogs are the greatest. They love you unconditionally and can cheer anyone up with the wag of their tail.

I have a 7lb. pup and, I swear, he makes me happier than anything in the world. Coming home to puppy kisses makes every worry go away and his cuddles are the absolute best.

There are certainly a lot of weird holidays that may or may not have been made up (National Toe Socks Day??) but today is one that is near and dear to my heart. National Puppy Day was established to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year. It's also a great day to show even more love to your dog than you would on any given day. Extra treats, anyone?

Speaking of treats, we've come up with a deliciously adorable recipe to make homemade treats for your furry best friend. Scroll down for the details!

For those who don't have a real dog at home (or those who want to be surrounded by even more pups!), stuffed ones are just as adorable and they come with loads of benefits for kids of all ages.

There are many benefits that come from children engaging in pretend-play with animals. For one, this type of pretend-play promotes imaginative, screen-free play. It also helps develop understanding, empathy, and care for other creatures. Pretend-play with animals, such as dogs and puppies, aids in developing emotional maturity in children and helps them understand animal and human relationships.

Right now you can purchase our Dog Training Set that sizes up perfectly for kids and their 18" dolls. The set is a 5-piece agility training set -- similar to what you see during dog shows on TV -- that comes with a hoop, a seesaw, a dog walk board, and two hurdles. Better yet, the set comes with five plush dogs; perfect for playing and even better for cuddling.

How cute are they? Your little one will have tons of fun naming their five new friends and teaching them to do all sorts of tricks on their agility set.

And now, as promised, here is our dog-approved homemade treat recipe.

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 cup plain, unsweetened applesauce
  • ¼ cup natural, unsweetened peanut butter (no xylitol)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 cups oat flour
  • 1 cup peeled & grated carrots
  • ½ cup unsweetened coconut flakes
  • Optional: cookie cutters

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, beat the applesauce, peanut butter, and eggs together with an electric mixer until blended.
  3. Carefully mix in the oat flour, carrots, and coconut flakes. If it is crumbly, add a little bit of water. If the mixture is too sticky, slowly add in a little bit of oat flour, but no more than ½ cup.
  4. Knead your mixture together on a surface lightly dusted with oat flour.
  5. Using a rolling pin sprinkled with oat flour, roll your dough out flat.
  6. Use your cookie cutter or a butter knife to cut shapes out of the dough. We used a dog-bone shaped cutter!
  7. Place your treats on your baking sheet and bake for about 18-20 minutes. Let cool completely before serving to your pup.
  8. Store treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks or in the refrigerator for 4 weeks.
