STEM With Allie - Make Your Own Volcano
As part of our Back To School Club Eimmie Contest, we're giving your child the chance to win something great -- and providing tons of fun while doing so! Now that we are back into the year school, you may be starting to look for fun projects to do at home!
For this month’s STEM With Allie, we are making our own volcanoes! This is a super fun, super easy project that can show your kiddos how different chemicals react. According to ScienceBob.com, “A volcano is produced over thousands of years as heat and pressure build up...this volcano will give you an idea of what it might look like when a volcano erupts flowing lava. This is a classic experiment in which a chemical reaction can create the appearance of a physical volcano eruption.”

In order to make your own volcano, here is what you need:
Materials
- A 35mm bottle - this can be an old bottle, baby food jar, or something similar
- Clay or play dough
- Food coloring of your choice
- Vinegar
- Liquid dishwashing soap
- Baking soda
Instructions
- Choose an appropriate area - this can be a little messy, so we suggest either outside or putting a tray on the table.
- Mold the clay or playdough around your bottle, forming a volcano shape.
- Once you have your volcano made, add a few drops of your selected food coloring
- Next, add two spoonfuls of baking soda.
- Then, add a spoonful of dish soap.
- Lastly, add an ounce of vinegar to your volcano and watch it come to life!
